HRDC Sued By Private Prison Medical Company for Seeking Prisoner Death Records—Don’t Let Them Bury The Truth With the Bodies
Centene Corporation is the 26th biggest corporation in America. They also own Centurion Health, a private for-profit company that takes taxpayer money to provide medical care to prisoners around the country. PLN has covered Centurion’s lengthy track record of medical neglect and routinely kills or maims dozens, if not hundreds, of prisoners every year mostly by denying them routine medical care to boost corporate profits. This private corporate behemoth is shrouded in secrecy and the Human Rights Defense Center is trying to bring to light just how many prisoners Centurion murders each year by filing public records requests. Centurion refusal to provide this information led HRDC to sue them in New Mexico and Vermont.
Two weeks ago Centurion attacked HRDC by filing suit to block us from getting public records related to the horrible death and murder of a Florida prisoner; specifically how much money did Centurion pay to settle this wrongful death case? What is the cost of doing business when your business model is taking as much taxpayer money and providing as little medical services as possible? And your business model leaves a trail of dead bodies in its wake.
This case is an example of a Strategic Lawsuits Against Public Participation (SLAPP) designed to silence HRDC and cow the media and concerned citizens into submission. We are being sued by a huge for-profit corporation because we want to expose how much they are paying when they murder people instead of giving them the medical care they are contracted by the state to provide. Centene is bigger than Bank of America, Target, United Parcel Service, Comcast, and almost every other company in America. Yet they are afraid of HRDC exposing their dirty laundry? And they are bringing the biggest guns they can hire, a large corporate law firm to attempt to stop us from asking questions and sharing the answers. They have over $115 BILLION a year in annual revenue and over 71,000 employees—but they want to stop us from standing up for better prison healthcare?
