$1 Award Suit By NY Jail Prisoner Assaulted By Prison Guard

Robert Ciaprazi, a prisoner in New York, filed a law suit against Nassau
County and Thomas Amato and Peter Skalkos, two jail guards, who allegedly
assaulted him. Ciaprazi, alleged that in 1996, guard Amato was withholding
food from him, and he became angry when another prisoner slipped him a
baked potato. Amato, then struck Ciaprazi on the left arm with a milk
crate. Ciaprazi, also alleged that guard Skalkos assaulted him in a
separate incident in 1996.

On February 1, 2002, the case went to jury trial in the US District Court,
Eastern District of New York. The jury found that guard Amato assaulted
Ciaprazi, but only awarded him nominal damages because the alleged injuries
were not serious. The jury dismissed the claim against Skalkos. Ciaprazi,
was represented by Dennis J. Kelly of Muraca & Kelly, L.L.P., Mineola, New
York. See: Ciaprazi v. County of Nassau, USDC, ED NY, Case No. 98 CV 6286.
