$1,000 Awarded in Texas Prisoner's Retaliation Claim
Sonny Wilson filed a grievance in August 1996 against guard Patria Perez
Lara. He claimed she would wake him up in the middle of the night, would
refuse to serve him his meals, and harassed him. After filing his
grievance, Lara wrote Wilson a disciplinary report for masturbating in
front of her, which resulted in loss of property and commissary privileges
for 30 days. A jury found Lara violated Wilson's first Amendment rights,
awarding him $1,008 and a notation in his prison file the guard's report
was a false complaint. See: Wilson v. Bush, USDC, E. Dist Texas, Case No.
6:97-CV-00281.
