$10,000 Florida Jury Award for Injunction and Confinement by False Claim

On June 10, 2002, a Florida jury awarded a man $10,000 against his ex-wife
for 191 days of imprisonment caused by her false accusations.
Caryl and Marilyn Brown were being divorced in 1988. She falsely claimed
he made repeated threats to shoot her and sought an Injunction for
Protection Against Domestic Violence which resulted in his imprisonment
for 191 days. He sued for false arrest and false imprisonment alleging his
reputation suffered and he had headaches, nausea, vomiting, teeth grinding
and mental distress, causing hospitalization and the loss of his license
to practice respiratory therapy due to the ordeal. He sought compensatory
and punitive damages for costs of hospitalization, medication and legal
expenses. The jury found she made a defamatory publication and committed
false imprisonment, awarding him $5,000 in compensatory damages and $5,000
in punitive damages. Both Browns represented themselves. See: Brown v.
Brown, No. 01-0102-CA-0l (Escambia County FL 6-10-02).
