$1,135,000 Paid to Massachusetts Prison Guard for Rape
Shirley when a prisoner defeated his cell's locking mechanism and brutally
beat and raped her. She sued the manufacturer and contractor of the
precast modular jail cells. There was a bow in the walls that prevented
the locking mechanism from being installed properly, there was a gap
through which the prisoner escaped, and the defendants failed to fix the
gap after another prisoner had previously escaped from the cell. The
contractor agreed to liability and settled the suit in May 1996 for
$1,135,000. The guard was represented by Robert D. Cohan of Boston.
