$1,200 Paid and Apology Given in WA Racial Discrimination Suit

Washington State Penitentiary officials agreed to settle a 42 U.S.C. §1983
action filed in the Eastern District of Washington federal court filed by
Sir Jesse R. Hunter. Hunter had placed his food tray on his cell door's
food slot for pick up by guards, who then purposely knocked it back into
the cell. Hunter the placed the tray under door with the result of it being
kicked back in by guards. Hunter then refused to "cuff up" for a cell
search. Guards then placed under Hunter's cell door a drawing of a hooded
KKK member that stated white pride, which made him fear of his safety. On
April 30, 1997, Hunter agreed to settle the suit for $1,200 and a letter
from Washington State Penitentiary apologizing for the custodial guards'
actions. See: Hunter v. Grienstaff, USDC ED WA, Case No. CY-96-3070- AAM,
unpublished.
