$1,200 Paid in WA Prisoner's Retaliation Claim

Timothy J. Beard filed a 42 U.S.C. section 1983 action in federal court
alleging he was denied employment by Correctional Industries at the Clallam
Bay Corrections Center. (CBCC). Beard had worked at the Industry when he
was terminated, along with several other prisoners, after an investigation
into a possible escape attempt. Beard was found to have no involvement in
the incident, but was denied employment. He then filed two grievances
contesting this failure to re-hire, which resulted in new hiring criteria
being set. Beard met the new criteria, and grieved again when he was still
denied rehiring. His lawsuit, filed in 1992, alleged he was denied
employment as retaliation for his grievances; he alleged that Robert
Crocker and Robert Shaw, the Industry Program and CBCC Associate
Superintendent respectively, blocked his rehiring. On November 8, 1995,
Beard, acting pro se, settled the suit for $1,200. See: Beard v. Crocker,
USDC W.D. WA. Case No. C92-52045.
