$150,000 Paid in Guard's Assault of Florida Jail Prisoner

While held at Florida's Duval County Jail in April 1991, a 39-year-old detainee requested to use the rest room. His second request was granted, but he had to urinate at the far end of the outdoor
compound. Later, he had to use the rest room again, and he proceeded to the same place. A guard, seeing him urinating, ran up to him and assaulted him by pulling his hands behind his back while jamming his face against the chain link fence. He was later thrown to the ground in the shake down room. The prisoner sued for his injuries of a fractured arm and lacerations to his face. In April 1997, a jury awarded the prisoner $150,000. See: Padgett v. City of Jacksonville, Fla. 4th Judicial Circuit, Case No: 93-02693.
