$150,000 Verdict in Failure to Train Suit for Withdrawal Death of CT Jail Prisoner

$150,000 Verdict in Failure to Train Suit for Withdrawal Death of CT Jail
Prisoner

A jury awarded $150,000 to the estate of a 41 year old Polish prisoner who
died in his jail cell of alcohol withdrawal and pneumonia. Arrested for
criminal trespass and incarcerated at Connecticut's Bridgeport City Jail,
the prisoner was unable to communicate his illness because he did not speak
English.

At trial, the guards admitted they had received no training to recognize
and deal with alcohol withdrawal, and the City had formulated no policies
or procedures in that regard. The jury found the city negligent fort
failure to train its officers and for lack of adequate policies and
procedures, resulting in wrongful death.

Despite testimony that the prisoner was obviously hallucinating and in
need of medical care, the jury found the guards did not act with callous
indifference to someone with an obvious medical need. See: McMahon v. City
of Bridgeport, Connecticut, Fairfield County Court, Case No: B84-519 (1986).
