$23,000 Washington DOC Negligence Baseball Field Maintenance Settlement

In 1992, Willie Tripplet, a prisoner confined at Pine Lodge Pre-Release in Medical Lake, Washington. was injured during a recreational baseball game. Tripplet tripped in a hole in front of home base as he attempted to slide, injuring his right hand, knee and face when flying head first into the backstop which had twisted wire sticking out of it. Tripplet suffered lacerations and abrasions that required him to have a number of stitches. Pine Lodge Pre-Release failed to inspect the area where Tripplet was injured. As a result, Tripplet's normal life had been altered due to injuries sustained. Represented by Spokane attorney L.N Axtell, Tripplet filed suit claiming the Washington Department of Corrections negligent failure to properly inspect the baseball field was the proximate cause of his injuries. The State of Washington settled out of court paying Tripplet $23,000 in 1993. See: Tripplet v. State of Washington, Spokane Co. Superior Court No. 93-2-01189-4.
