$500 Paid in WA Racial Segregation Suit

Muhammad Shabazz Farrakhan and a group of black prisoners at the Washington State Penitentiary in Walla Walla, Washington filed a 42 U.S.C. § 1983 alleging racial discrimination in housing assignments. Farrakhan alleged prisoners were given race cards and each racial group, Whites, Hispanics, Blacks, Indians, Asians was assigned to a cell and. the races were not mixed in cell assignments. If 4 prisoners desired to integrate, then he must submit a "kite" and explain in an interview with a team of prison officials the reason why integration was sought in cell assignment. The complaint also alleged Blacks were disproportionately singled out for infractions at disciplinary hearings. A settlement agreement in the case reveals prisoner Al-Kareem Shadeed settled his claim, pro se, for $500. It is unclear how the claims of the other prisoners were settled. See: Farrakhan v. Lowry, U.S.D.C. Eastern District Washington, Case No. CS-96-075 JLQ.
