Burned Foot Nets $9,000 for Florida Jail Prisoner
While incarcerated at Florida's Volusia County Jail in March 1993, the prisoner plaintiff in this case was working in the jail's kitchen, which was operated by Szabo Correctional Services. Boiling water from the steam kettle spilled onto the prisoner's right foot, causing third degree burns and nerve damage. The prisoner alleged the kitchen was not maintained in a safe manner. The matter was settled by paying the prisoner $9,000. See: Lay v. Volusia County, Florida, Fla. 7th Judicial Circuit Court, Case No. 95-10799.
