Colorado: City Pays $240,000 to Victims of Serial Rapist

On January 30, 2006, the city of Aurora, Colorado, announced it would pay
$240,000 to four women raped by a man they claimed should have been
arrested months earlier.

In November 2004, Brent J. Brents admitted to molesting an 8 year old
Aurora boy. But because of an alleged miscommunication between police and
the district attorney's office, an arrest warrant was not issued until
January 26, 2005.

By the time he was finally arrested on February 18, 2005, Brents had
assaulted 14 women and children. One woman, whom Brents beat severely,
suffered permanent brain damage. Another, whom he kidnapped and was with
him when he was caught, killed herself. Brent was subsequently sentenced to
1500 years in prison.

Aurora Police Chief Ricky Bennet resigned after the Brets debacle, while
the city manager and deputy manager were each suspended without pay for two
weeks.

Attorneys who represented the victims pro Bono reached the settlement
without filing suit. "A trial would subject our clients to reliving the
trauma they experienced," said attorney James M. Miletich, whose client was
raped in Denver on February 11.

Money damages were sought in order to send a message to officials who
mishandled the case, said Sean Gallagher, an attorney for a woman Brents
raped in her Denver pet store. "They want to ensure this does not happen
again," he said.

The 4 victims each received $60,000.
