Federal Prisoner's Estate Awarded $78,000 for Suicide

In July 1998, a federal court awarded $78,000 to the estate of a prisoner
who committed suicide at a federal prison in Missouri.

The estate claimed in the lawsuit that prison medical personnel failed to
provide medication for the decedent's known depression. The estate further
asserted that improper medication led to the depression and resulted in the
prisoner's suicide by hanging in December 1994. The government claimed that
other circumstances led to the prisoner's depression. See: Chilton v.
United States, USDC D MO, Case No. 4:96CU2533, 1998 WL 907567.
