FL Cops Sic Dog On Suspect; Court Remits Damage Award
On January 29, 2003, Broward County sheriff's deputies went to an
apartment in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida to arrest Henry Lafavors. Deputy
Olarte entered the apartment and deployed a police dog to subdue Lafavors,
who sustained numerous dog bites. He filed an excessive force claim in a
federal district court, where a jury awarded him $35,000 in damages. But
the district court promptly nullified that award when it issued a judgment
as a matter of law for Olarte in 2006. Lafavors is appealing that verdict.
