Imprisoned Idaho Prison Guard Settles Jail Suit in Exchange For Surgery

In 2000, Ed Stevens, a former Idaho State Penitentiary guard, was
incarcerated in the Ada County jail on child abuse charges. While
incarcerated he was attacked by another prisoner and punched in the face.
He suffered a torn tear duct in one eye and a one-inch scar. He filed suit
in state court against the Ada County jail claiming permanent scarring and
visual impairment due to tearing problems.

In 2002 Stevens settled his suit against the jail with the county agreeing
to pay the medical costs of reconstructing Steven's tear duct upon receipt
of certification by a qualified doctor that such surgery was necessary.
Stevens received other medical care while in the jail's custody. No
damages were paid as part of the settlement. See: Stevens v. Ada County,
Fourth District Court, Ada County, Case No. CV-PI-00-90.
