New Mexico Detention Center Closed for Constitutional Violations
The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of New Mexico and several New Mexico state prisoners, sued the Board of County Commissioners for Valencia County (Board) in federal district court over numerous constitutional violations at the Valencia County Detention Center (Center). The Board conceded the violations, and the court ordered the Center closed until its guards could be trained to operate within constitutional limits. See: ACLU v. Board of County Commissioners of Valencia County, USDC DNM, Case No. 97¬1318 LH/WWD (1997).
