$1,360.50 Settlement in Washington State Public Records Act Litigation
The Washington State Department of Corrections (WDOC) paid $1,360.50 to settle a Public Records Act claim. The Settlement came in a suit brought by prisoner Brandt Sappenfield.
In his July 20, 2002 complaint, Sappenfield alleged that on February 11, 2002, he mailed a public disclosure request to the WDOC public disclosure officer via certified mail. He contended that they failed to either disclose the documents or respond with a claim of proper statutory exemption within five working days of receipt of request.
Acting pro se, Sappenfield accepted a settlement on May 12, 2003. See: Sappenfield v. Department of Corrections, State of Washington, Thurston County Sup. Ct., Case No. 02-2-01658-5
