$3,000 Settlement in D.C. Prisoner’s Failure to Protect Lawsuit

The District of Columbia (D.C.) paid $3,000 to settle the lawsuit of prisoner Eyassu Teklu for negligence.

While at the D.C. Jail on January 10, 1998 Teklu was assaulted and battered by another prisoner with an iron pipe, causing severe permanent injuries to his face and left eye.

His complaint alleged breach of duty of care, acts of deliberate neglect, and reckless disregard for the safety and well being of Teklu while in custody.

Teklu accepted settlement on May 18. 2000. He was represented by Washington D.C. attorney Harry T. Spikes. See: Teklu v. District of Columbia, Superior Court, District of Columbia, Case No. 98-9887.
