TDCJ Pays $80,162.50 to Settle Suit over Truck Collision

In June, 2004, the Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ) agreed to settle a lawsuit over a collision caused by a prisoner-driven tractor trailer for $80,162.50.

On July 20, 2000, Texas state prisoner Richard Wayne Howe, Jr. was driving a TDCJ tractor trailer in Grimes County, Texas, when he made an unprotected left turn causing a tractor trailer owned by HHH Transport to collide with him. HHH Transport filed suit in state district court. TDCJ agreed to settle the suit for a payment of $50,000 to HHH and $30,162.50 to an insurance company. The settlement also covers claims by HHH and the insurance company against Howe.
