Washington DOC Settles Claims over Food Poisoning Outbreak

Eight prisoners affected by food poisoning while incarcerated at the Washington State Penitentiary accepted settlement offers of $1000 each on their claims of unsanitary food service practices against the Washington Department of Corrections (WDOC).

Plaintiffs experienced high fever, vomiting, cramps, diarrhea, and dehydration after consuming food dispersed by the prison cafeteria. Upon examination, each plaintiff was diagnosed and treated for campylobacter infection, an outbreak determined to have occurred due to a leaking, uncapped pipe in the kitchen salad prep-area that allowed water contaminated with pigeon feces to leak into the kitchen and contaminate the food.

The WDOC settled with each plaintiff individually between June 6 and July 13, 2004.
