Los Angeles County Offers $150,000 to Settle Patrol Vehicle Accident Suit

In August 2012, the Los Angeles County Claims Board recommended that the Board of Supervisors make an offer of $150,000 to settle a lawsuit arising from an automobile accident that occurred in the early morning hours of June 21, 2010, when a Sheriff's patrol vehicle rolled over the foot of a pedestrian, Robert Durham.

The suit alleged negligence on the part of the Sheriff's deputy. The investigation by the Sheriff's Department, on the other hand, concluded that Durham, the pedestrian, caused the accident by failing to yield at a crosswalk. The Claims Board recommended settlement of the case because of the uncertainties inherent in litigation. See: Durham v. County of Los Angeles, Los Angeles Superior Court (Ca.), Case No. BC 457 732.
