Los Angeles County Settles in Sexual Harassment/Assault Case

Los Angeles County Settles in Sexual Harassment/Assault Case

In August 2012, Los Angeles County settled with Plaintiff Sylvia Wilson for $375,000.00 less $122,915.00 in attorney fees and costs. Plaintiff alleged sexual harassment and assault in May 2010 while a participant in the Probation Adult Alternative Work Service Program (PAAWS) after pleading nolo contendere to a misdemeanor associated with removing fixtures or parts of realty. Plaintiff alleged she was subjected to sexual harassment by a Department Crew Inspector, when he took her away from other workers and subjected her to a sexually motivated action.

Wilson filed a government tort claim in November 2010, and in March 2011 filed a lawsuit alleging sexual battery, intentional affliction of emotional distress and violation of civil rights. In addition to the cash settlement, the county instituted changes to the PAAWS program to ensure such would not happen again, and the Crew Inspector was fired. See: Wilson v. County ofLos Angeles, Los Angeles Superior Court, Case No. BC 456 759.
