$8,500 Settlement in Beating of Prisoner Due to CCA Guard Opening Cell Door

$8,500 Settlement in Beating of Prisoner Due to CCA Guard Opening Cell Door

Correction Corporation of America paid $8,500 to settle a lawsuit by prisoner Randall A. Myers, who alleged he was severely beaten by other prisoners due to guards negligently opening his cell door.

Myers alleged that while sleeping in his cell at Whiteville Correctional Complex on the morning of July 29, 2003, a guard in the control room opened his cell door for three other prisoners. Two of those prisoners then assaulted Myers.

According to the complaint, Myers suffered a bruised left kidney, bruised ribs, a cut above his left eye that required eight stitches, two black eyes, and bruising to the left side of his face.

The February 2004 confidential settlement was obtained via public records request by PLN. Myers acted pro se.
