$8,500 Settlement for Sexual Assault of Minor by Alabama Prisoner on Work Release

The city of Cordova, Alabama, agreed to pay $8,564.26 to settle a lawsuit that charged it failed to properly supervise a prisoner who sexually assaulted a minor while on work release.

The prisoner was a known violent criminal who had previously been convicted of criminal assault in the second degree. He was released by Walker County into the custody of the city of Cordova to perform services and duties. On July 7, 2002, he was dropped off without supervision in downtown Cordova. He then went to the home of the minor plaintiff Jane Doe and committed a sexual assault upon her.

The settlement was reached on November 3, 2005. The plaintiff was represented by Jasper attorney James Cain Brakefield.
