Pennsylvania Officer’s Widow Receives $5 Million Settlement for Accidental Shooting Death

Pennsylvania Officer’s Widow Receives $5 Million Settlement for Accidental Shooting Death

In November 10, 2009, the City of Easton agreed to pay $5 million to Carin Sollman, the widow of Officer Jesse Sollman. After the 2005 accidental shooting death of her husband by fellow officer Matthew Renninger, she filed a federallawsuit in 2007.

Ms. Sollman had sought $20 million. She claimed that poor conditions for gun safety in the police department led to the shooting of her husband inside police headquarters. Instead, the $5 million settlement was reached. The city planned to pay through a bond, while hoping insurer, Scottdale Insurance Co., will reimburse the city.

Mayor Sal Panto Jr. agreed to the compensation for Mrs. Sollman and her two children. He said the settlement would allow the family to move on from the suffering of the loss of a husband and a father. The settlement also avoided a trial that was set to begin a week later.

Themorningcall.Com reported that a joint statement was forthcoming. There was no mention of any admission of wrongdoing by the city or its officials.
