$250,000 Settlement in Los Angeles County Paramedic Negligence Suit

$250,000 Settlement in Los Angeles County Paramedic Negligence Suit

The County of Los Angeles settled in February 2012 for $250,000 with the estate of a minor, Andriy Sviridov, after insufficient treatment by paramedics left Sviridov in a persistently vegetative state. Responding to a 911 call from a McDonald’s parking lot in West Hollywood, paramedics found plaintiff awake and alert after he was involved in a gang related altercation. Sviridov maintained that he was okay and did not need treatment. Paramedics examined him and found nothing apparent that warranted transportation to a medical facility, so they released him to his older brother. After returning to the station, one crew member stated that he observed urinary incontinence at the scene. The team member filling out the EMS form failed to note the condition at the scene, but added the observation to the report.

The following morning a 911 call directed paramedics to Sviridov’s home, where they found him in an altered state of consciousness. Pupils were dilated and fixed, non-responsive to everything except painful stimuli. Doctors diagnosed Sviridov with bleeding on the brain.

Sviridov’s guardian ad litem filed suit with Los Angeles Superior Court averring negligence on the part of paramedics who noted a symptom, but did not investigate the cause or extent of the trauma. The County settled with Sviridov monetarily, and with corrective action by providing further training for paramedics.
