French Prisons Targeted
in Coordinated Attack

A wave of attacks against six prison facilities around France on April 15, 2025, was called a coordinated effort by drug gangs to push back against government crackdowns targeting their incarcerated leaders.

Justice Minister Gerald Darmanin vowed that “[t]he Republic will not back down” after the attacks. They included an attempted arson at a Marseilles prison, a threat to a Nancy prison official at his home and fires set outside lockups in Villepinte, Nanterre, Aix-Luynes and Valence, according to the union representing prison guards, UFAP. All six sites were left graffitied with the letters “DDPF,” an apparent acronym for prisoner’s rights.

PNAT, the national anti-terrorism prosecutor’s office, took control of the investigation into the attacks, assisted by the French domestic intelligence agency, DGSI. Darmanin said his office also plans to build new high-security cells to further isolate the alleged prisoner kingpins.
