Slender Man Stabber’s Escape Prompts “Serious Questions” for Wisconsin DOC

National Public Radio reported that Morgan Geyser, 23, one of the notorious “Slender Man” stabbers, was apprehended near Chicago on November 23, 2025, after escaping her Wisconsin group home. Geyser had cut off her GPS ankle monitor and was reported missing the day before. Madison police were not notified for nearly 12 hours.

Geyser was ultimately located 165 miles away at a truck stop in Posen, Illinois, sleeping on a sidewalk next to Chad “Charly” Mecca, 43. The two had met at a church several months prior to the incident, and were reportedly planning to flee to Nashville, Tennessee. Mecca was charged with criminal trespassing and obstructing identification, according to police.

When questioned by officers, she initially provided a false name before refusing to identify herself. She then advised police to “just Google” her name, suggesting she had “done something really bad.” Geyser was wanted for escape less than a month after being released from a psychiatric facility and placed in the group home, nearly a decade after her 2014 conviction for stabbing a classmate more than a dozen times in an attempt to please a fictional character.

Three DOC staff members were placed on administrative leave as Geyser’s escape is being investigated, Wisconsin Public Radio reported. A letter sent by state lawmakers to DOC head Jared Hoy noted that the incident raised “serious questions” about the DOC’s Community Corrections Program effectiveness. In response, Hoy said the DOC has already changed its procedures to increase response time to tampered ankle monitors.
