Officer uses taser on Monroe High student
Article published Dec 1, 2005
A liaison officer used his Taser to help control an unruly student who allegedly assaulted the sheriffs deputy at Monroe High
School Wednesday morning.
MHS Principal Ralph Carducci said the student was apologetic after the incident and suffered no injuries from the incident that
occurred about 11:30 a.m.
He was very remorseful, Mr. Carducci said.
The 18-year-old junior was arrested on a charge of creating a disturbance and lodged in the county jail.
Mr. Carducci said the student became uncontrollable after he was asked to return to class. The student was taking a second lunch
hour and Mr. Carducci said he approached him about it.
All I wanted him to do was to go back to class, he said. The kid just lost it.
The student reportedly refused to cooperate, so Deputy Todd Sulfaro grabbed him by the arm. At that point, the incident
escalated.
Mr. Carducci said the student went out of control and slammed the deputy against the doors near the main office. The student was
warned repeatedly to stop his behavior otherwise the deputy would use the Taser.
Mr. Carducci said the student refused. The deputy used the Taser just enough to bring the student under control, he said.
It was just enough to make him understand, Mr. Carducci said. There was no other way to get him under control. It worked.
Mr. Carducci said the situation could have worsened if not for the Taser. He said the electronic weapon helped ease a difficult
situation that could have become even more dangerous.
Deputy Sulfaro began carrying a Taser, which sends an electrical current that causes temporary muscle lock-up, this year after the
school bought one for about $900. School and police officials have endorsed the idea.

Taser Used In Monroe High
A Monroe High School liason officer had to use his taser to control an unruly 18-year-old
student earlier this week. School officials say the student was arrested after shoving the
officer against a wall, when he was asked to return to class. He was tased to bring him
under control and school officials say the situation could have been worse if it had not been
used.
