Conducted Energy Weapons

The division's approved Conducted Energy Weapon (CEW) is the Taser M26. The Taser M26 will
be carried in a division approved conveyance system.
All uniform personnel may carry the CEW's upon successful completion of a training program.
Sworn non-unform personnel will have access to the CEW's system.
CEWs may be used when physical force is necessary and justified to prevent the possibility of
injury to the officer or another person. A display of the CEWs "test arc" or "painting" the subject
with the laser is permitted to gain compliance in an arrest situation where resistance is
anticipated.
CEWs wil not be use in the following situations:
Near flammable gases or liquids
Drug houses wher ether use is suspected
In cases of passive resistance unless a lesser means of force;
Has been attempted and failed
Is not an option due to the circumstances
If attempted, will result in a possible injury to the suspect or officer
Threaten use to gain information from a suspect
Against a subject already in custody unless physical resistance has to be overcome
To awaken an intoxicated individual
No officer shall playfully, maliciously, or intentionally misuse the unit in a display of power or
against an individual except to gain control of a situation. VIOLATION OF THIS POLICY WILL
RESULT IN DISCIPLINARY ACTION.
The deployment and use of the CEWs will require the following reports:
Offense
Custody
Use of Force
The documentation will include :
What precipitated the use of the unit?
To what extent CEWs was utilized.
ngWhat were the results of the CEWs utilization?
A copy of the CEWs firing record will be attached to the use of force report.
