Attempted Hanging Suit Settled for $1.5 Million by California Jail

A California prisoner was paid $1.5 million to settle a suit for injuries incurred when he attempted to hang himself.

Mr. Davey was a 21-year-old prisoner when he attempted to hang himself with a bed sheet in a California jail. Davey suffered anoxic brain damage, resulting in quadriplegia due to the suicide attempt.

Davey sued jail officials in federal court, alleging that they knew he had a history of suicide attempts but negligently placed him in an unmonitored, non-suicide proof cell, without psychiatric treatment just days after an attempted drug overdose. He also alleged that he was denied adequate medical care, following his suicide attempt. Defendants argued that they provided appropriate care, but agreed to pay Davey $1.5 million to settle the case in January, 1994. See: Davey v. Gomez, USDC ED CA, No. CIV-5-94-0151.
