Louisiana Prisoner Paid $1,822 in Emotional Damages for Moving Dead Body

A Louisiana prisoner was paid $1,822 to settle emotional distress claims related to being forced to move the body of a prisoner who hung himself to death.

Mr. Cotton was a prisoner at the Shreveport City Jail when he was ordered to touch the body of a hepatitis B infected prisoner who hanged himself to death.

Cotton sued in state court alleging Defendant negligently failed to provide a standard and safe procedure for corpse removal, and forced a prisoner to perform Defendant?s duties. Cotton claimed that he suffered emotional distress as a result of the incident. In January, 1994, defendants paid Cotton $1,822 to settle the case before trial. Cotton was represented by James D. Turnage of Shreveport, Louisiana. See: Cotton v. City of Shreveport, case No. Unknown (Unknown State Ct.)(1996 WL 504621)
