$14,000 Tort Claim Settlement In Washington On Smoking Suit

In 1999 the Washington State Department of Corrections settled a tort claim
with correctional sergeant, Ladean Ryan for $14,000. In 1995 the plaintiff
complained to her supervisor at the Washington Corrections Center in
Shelton that she could not work in a smoke filled environment and as a
result he told her to wear a mask or cover her face. She was also subjected
to harassment and negative work evaluations due to her complaint. Despite
this suit and several others some cell blocks in Washington still allow
smoking. Plaintiff was represented by attorney Michael Hanbey. See: Ryan v.
State Of Washington; Thurston County Superior Court Case No.97-2-01177-6.
