$34,000 Paid in Texas Prisoners' Retaliation Claim
filed a lawsuit to practice their Jewish religion, guards began retaliating
against them. The retaliation came in the form of job changes, cell
reassignments, transfers, and disciplinary action for the filing of their
January 1995 complaint. One of the plaintiff prisoners was killed upon
transferring to a new prison three days after this suit for retaliation was
filed.
A jury's December 1997 verdict awarded the prisoners $13,602. Post trial,
the parties reached a settlement of $34,102 that kept a judgment from being
