$35,000 Paid to Florida Jail Nurse for Assault

On November 12, 1988, while employed as a nurse at Florida's Palm
Beach County Jail, Ella Donald was assaulted by a prisoner on suicide
watch after a guard opened the prisoner's cell. The prisoner charged
through the door, striking Donald. She sustained a torn interior cruciate
ligament that required arthroscopic surgery. When a prisoner is on
suicide watch, two guards and a supervisor are required to be present when
the cell is opened. In this case, only one guard and one supervisor were
present. The matter was settled for $35,000 on June 1, 1993. Donald was
represented by Phillip Houston of West Palm Beach. See: Donald v.
Sheriff Palm Beach County, Palm Beach County Circuit Court, Case No. 91-
12831 AJ.
