$4,500 Awarded In New York Prisoner Assault Suit

In 2000 the New York, Court of Claims awarded $4,500 in damages to a
prisoner who was assaulted and slashed by another prisoner at the Sullivan
Correctional Facility, in New York on March 2, 1996. His assailant, named
Salcedo, was a "Keep Lock" prisoner who was only allowed out of his cell 1
hour a day. Salcedo went into the day room area that he was not supposed
to go into and slashed the claimant with a can top. Donald Ronaldson filed
a Pro Se claim in the Court of Claims, New York and was awarded $4,500 on
3/15/00. The court agreed that the prison was negligent due to the
prisoners past record of violence, his "Keep Lock" status and the lack of
supervision of the prisoner. Claimant received three lacerations to his
left arm, he was not awarded future pain and suffering awards because he
was right handed and he did not offer any medical evidence of permanency.
