“Large Fight” Broke Out at Alaska Prison After Downsizing Effort

by Jo Ellen Knott

The Alaska Beacon reported that the state’s “cost-cutting” downsizing measures backfired when a costly riot broke out at the Spring Creek Correctional Center in Seward. On January 24, 2026, a massive brawl involving 50 prisoners erupted at Spring Creek, the state’s only maximum-security prison. DOC Commissioner Jen Winkelman admitted to lawmakers on February 10, 2026, that the violence was fueled by “pressures of moving individuals around” after the legislature ordered a 247-bed housing unit closed last July. This measure left the prison with only two other housing units.

The resulting overcrowding and over-capacity status forced the DOC to spend an unbudgeted $200,000 on medical and transport costs. Deputy Commissioner April Wilkerson conceded that the downsizing failed to achieve identified savings, proving once again that stripping bed space without reducing populations only increases prison instability and state liability. As Alaska’s sole maximum-security site, Spring Creek faces chronic unrest. Key incidents include a 2015 housing unit takeover, 2020 lockdown protests involving coordinated resistance, and a 2023 disturbance requiring chemical agents.
