Ohio Guards Win $475,000 in Sex Discrimination Suit

Bonnie Jayne, Christina Nichols, Jaqueline Hurst, Tia Hazinakis, Bonnie Flynn, Nicole O'Brien and Karen Martin, all guards at a correctional facility in Trumbull County, Ohio, sued the county in federal district court for gender discrimination. They claimed that the discrimination resulted from their supervisors' use of different lists, one of male guards and one of female guards, to award promotions.

After 1 1/2 hours of deliberation a jury found for the women in December 2006, awarding $450,000 in damages as follows: $102,000 for Jayne; $76,000 for Nichols; $61,000 for Hurst; $101,000 for Ilazinakis; $48,000 for Flynn; $51,000 for O'Brien and $36,000 for Martin. The plaintiffs were also awarded $90,916.50 in attorney’s fees. See: Flynn v. Trumbull County, U.S.D.C. (N.D. Ohio), Case No. 4:02-cv-00773-AA.
