$25,000,000 Consent Judgment Entered Against Murderer

Caitlan Atwater, the daughter of a woman murdered by her husband, has obtained a $25,000,000 consent judgment.

Atwater sued Michael Peterson after Kathleen Peterson, Atwater’s daughter from another marriage, was beaten to death by Peterson. The parties agreed to a consent judgment of $25,000,000, contingent upon Peterson’s conviction being upheld on appeal.

Peterson’s convictions were later affirmed and the consent judgment was entered. Peterson attempted to block the judgment through bankruptcy, but Atwater was able to obtain a ruling that the judgment was not dischargeable from a bankruptcy judge. Atwater was represented by Jerome Trehy, Jr. of Raleigh. See: Carolina Verdict Reporter – Superior Court – Atwater v. Peterson (Durham, NC).
