$90,000 Settlement for Tasering Epileptic

Washington State’s City of Lakewood paid $90,000 to settle the claim of a man who was tasered and punched after having an epileptic seizure. The man, identified as Mr. Grider, had a history of epileptic seizures that he quickly recovered from.

While at work, he had such a seizure. A co-worker called 911. When medics arrived, Grider was conscious and refused medical attention. The medics called police, saying Grider was aggressive and threatening.

After Grider resisted the police officers’ attempts to calm him and get him to go to a hospital, officer Reynaldo Z. Punzalan tasered Grider, punched him in the face, handcuffed him, and had medics take him to a hospital.

No criminal charges were filed. Grider then sued and the matter settled for $90,000 and implementation of a new taser policy that requires police to consider if the person may have a medical condition, such as multiple sclerosis, muscular dystrophy, or epilepsy, before tasering them.
