$10,000 Settlement in Withheld Wages/Title Claim

Washington State’s King County paid $10,000 to settle a claim that alleged it placed Clarissa T. Berry in a supervisory position on January 1, 1996 to oversee the food services department for Youth Services Management without providing her training, a title or pay for the position. In July of that year, she received a letter of reprimand saying she was not performing the expectations of a supervisor and given expectations.

In September, Berry filed a grievance under her collective bargaining agreement, which was found to be valid. She claimed that the stress from the lack of authority and backing of management caused her to gain up to 290 pounds, requiring a gastrobypass. King County settled her claim for $10,000, gave her training and the title of the position she was performing. She acted pro se to obtain her November 12, 2003 settlement.
