$112,500 Settlement in Kitsap County Jail Wrongful Death

Washington State’s Kitsap County Jail paid $112,500 to settle the lawsuit of the estate of Desiree Wilson, who hanged herself with a bed sheet tied to the smoke detector in her cell on April 22, 1997. Her death left her 4-year-old son without a mother.

The claim states that Wilson was visibly in a state of despair the day before while at court. Jail authorities knew she had serious mental problems that included multiple suicide attempts, as well as bi-polar disorder with a history of drug and alcohol problems. Despite that, she did not receive care or medication for her problems at the jail.

Represented by the Silverdale law firm of J. Michael Koch and Associates, the claim was settled on November 24, 2000. The documents related to this claim are available on PLN’s website. See: Estate of Wilson v. Kitsap Co., Pierce Co. Supr. Ct., No. 00-2-06696-7.
