$15,000 Settlement for Seattle Jail Work Injury

Washington State’s King County paid $14,928.70 to settle the lawsuit of Bonni Estes, who alleged damages from an incident at the Kent Regional Justice Center on March 7, 2002. That day she was working in the Center’s bakery, assisting another prisoner in cleaning a dough machine, which fell on her foot and broke it. The machine was deceptive in appearance, unstable and unsafe for use without proper instruction.

In addition to not receiving that instruction, Estes claimed jail medical personnel prematurely removed the cast from her foot, enhancing her injury. Represented by Seattle attorney Charles S. Hamilton III, Estes settled the claim for $11,583.15 in damages and $3,345.55 in costs. The date of settlement is unknown, but the complaint was filed on June 15, 2004. The documents related to this claim are available on PLN’s website. See: Estes v. King County, King Co. Supr. Ct., No. 04-2-14195-8 KNT.
