$20,000 Settlement to Attorney Attacked/Arrested by Guard in Courtroom

Washington State’s King County has paid $20,000 to settle the claim of attorney Nicholas George, who was attacked and arrested on August 22, 2002 by jail guards Floyd Drane and Bruce Lockhart.

Despite not asking any other attorneys and knowing who George was, Drane instructed Lockhart to ask for George’s identification before allowing him in the courtroom. George had previously represented Drane in a dissolution action. After he was in the courtroom and had his back to the rest of the room, George was violently seized, knocked to the ground, handcuffed and dragged out of the courtroom by Drane, who took George to jail. Officials there learned Drane was a disgruntled client and released George, who sustained a back injury and contusions and lacerations on his right arm. Drane’s subsequent bar complaint against George was dismissed and George obtained an anti-harassment order against Drane.

Represented by attorney David G. Arganian, George settled his claim on April 7, 2003. The documents relative to this claim are on PLN’s website. See In re George, King County Claim No. 33226.
