NY City Settles ADA/RA Suit for $400,000

On August 2, 2007, the City of New York agreed to settle a suit brought by a handicapped man who was injured while being transported to Rikers Island.

According to Devin Sayers’ complaint, guards did not secure his wheelchair to the floor of the van that was used to take him to Rikers Island. As a result, Sayer’s wheelchair flipped back while in transit, injuring him. Sayers was allegedly left on the floor until he reached Rikers Island.

The city settled the case for $400,000. Sayers was represented by Brett Klein of Leventhal & Klein, a Staten Island firm.
