$900 Settlement for California Prisoner Attacked after Guard Malfeasance

The California Department of Corrections (CDOC) agreed to pay $900 to a prisoner who was attacked by rival prisoners at Corcoran State Prison.

On July 12, 2008 Samuel Saldana was beaten by Hispanics from southern California after S. Walsh, a guard, opened his cell door for the attackers, Saldana’s lawsuit alleged. Saldana, a Hispanic from northern California, was supposed to have been kept separate from southern Hispanics, according to his complaint. Saldana’s eye and back were hurt in the attack.

The CDOC agreed to settle Saldana’s civil rights claims on July 2, 2010. See: Saldana v. Walsh, No. 09-1288 (E.D. Cal. 2010).
