$465,000 Award in New York Jail Guard’s Sexual Harassment Suit

A $465,000 award was granted by a federal jury to a female county corrections officer in a sexual harassment suit.

Amy Negron filed suit against former Ulster County sheriff Paul Van Blarcum, former sheriff Richard Bockelman, and Corporal Paul Wesoloski, alleging that in December 2005, Wesolowski cornered her. Negron, who had been an Ulster County guard for 13 years, first filed complaint with the federal Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) some five and half years ago. The EEOC’s investigation determined Negron had grounds for a lawsuit, which Negron filed in June 2008.

In October 2011, the federal jury awarded Negron $390,000 from Ulster County, $30,000 from Van Blarcum, $30,000 from Bockelman, and $15,000 from Wesolowski. Negron was represented by Joseph Ranni. The attorney for Ulster County stated that the county might appeal. See: Negron v. Ulster County, Case No. 1:08-CV-692 (N.D.N.Y. 2010).
