Oregon Jail Guard Stabbed in the Face with Pencil

On August 7, 2011, two prisoners stabbed a guard in the face with a pencil at the Washington County Jail (WCJ) in Hillsboro, Oregon.

Deputy Adam Slater, 27, was working at a desk at about 4 p.m., on Sunday, August 7, 2011 when Alejandro Arenas Martinez, 20, snuck up behind him and stabbed him twice in the cheek and once near the ear, with a pencil, according to Sgt. David Thompson, a sheriff's spokesman. Alfonso Martinez, Jr., 30, also joined in the attack, said Thompson.

Three other prisoners came to Slater's aid. Slater was treated for puncture wounds to his face.

Authorities did not release the reason for the attack. Alejandro Martinez is awaiting trial for attempted murder and Alfonso Martinez was facing probation violations. It is unclear if the attackers are related, but they will most certainly be co¬defendants on Attempted Aggravated Murder and Assault charges, which carry lengthy mandatory minimum prison sentences. The Washington County Major Crimes Team is investigating the incident.
