$5,001 Paid for Failing to Protect Florida Prisoner

While held at Florida’s Martin Correctional Institution in January 1992, the plaintiff prisoner was attacked by two prisoners, sustaining serious stab wounds to the head, face, shoulders, as well as multiple minor injuries, along with a broken dental plate. Plaintiff alleged prison officials failed to protect him after being alerted that another prisoner had put a hit on him because plaintiff had killed the prisoner’s brother. The action was settled in January 1994 for $5,001. See: Smith v. Florida Dept. of Corrections, Fla. 19th Judicial Circuit Court, Case No. 94-38, 1996 WL 921473
